Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone was joined by Randi Dresner, President & CEO of Island Harvest, and Suffolk County Fire, Rescue and Emergency personnel to highlight September 3rd as Hunger Action Day and September as Hunger Action Month.
In honor of Hunger Action Day, Suffolk County donated over 36,950 Meals Ready to Eat (MRE) to Island Harvest to assist the organization with providing meals to over 316,000 Long Islanders on a yearly basis.
“I am proud that Suffolk County has partnered with Island Harvest and a host of not-for-profit agencies across Suffolk County to distribute more than 51,000 MRE’s to organizations to assist them in serving those in need in Suffolk County,” said County Executive Steve Bellone. “I encourage all residents of Suffolk County to take part in Hunger Action Month as it provides an opportunity to join a movement that has a real and lasting impact on efforts to feed more Long Islanders than ever before.”
“Island Harvest is grateful for the cooperation and continued support of County Executive Bellone and the Suffolk County Department of Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services in addressing the critical issue of hunger on Long Island,” said Randi Shubin Dresner, President and CEO, Island Harvest. “Partnerships like these that have a tangible and positive impact in making a difference in the lives of more than 316,000 Long Islanders facing hunger every day.”
One in six Americans face hunger on a daily basis. Food insecurity exists in every county in America. In 2013, 17.5 million households were food insecure with 3.9 million of those households containing children.
