The Huntington Elks Lodge donated hundreds of dictionaries to third-grade students at Maplewood and Birchwood Intermediate Schools as part of their philanthropic efforts within the Huntington community. Through initiatives like this, the Huntington Elks continue to implement the theme “Elks Care – Elks Share” as a foundation for their philanthropic efforts.
During November, Huntington Elks Past Exalted Rulers Jack Safarik and Bob Vandenburgh and Elks Leading Knight Alyssa Nightingale visited the schools to formally present the dictionaries to the students.
“This initiative is focused on promoting literacy in our schools and to serve as a tool to support the wonderful work of our teachers as the children transition from how to read to researching and using information on a broader basis,” explains Jack Safarik. “Anything we can do to help our children thrive is a positive thing, but seeing the smiles on the children’s faces and their excitement in receiving the dictionaries makes the charitable work we do as Elks even more enjoyable,” added Alyssa Nightingale.
