An Owl-trageous Experience

In conjunction with their study unit on evolution, students in Richard Greening’s biology class at Elwood-John H. Glenn High School in the Elwood Union Free School District participated in a wildlife encounter with a red-tailed hawk and great horned owl.

For the visit, Greg Matonis, a hospital supervisor at the Evelyn Alexander Wildlife Rescue Center brought the two birds of prey to the class. As a former employee of the wildlife rescue center in Hampton Bays, Greening had ample experience handing the animals and explaining their unique features.

During the class, the students compared homologous and analogous traits and how it related to the theory of natural selection.
