Led by representatives from Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory DNA Learning Center, fifth-grade students at James H. Boyd Intimidate School in the Elwood Union Free School District participated in a hands-on activity that allowed them to construct a model representation of a cell.
During the lesson, students learned about the structure and functions of cells. Using a clear plastic bag to act as the cell membrane, the fifth-graders created a cell model, complete with various shaped beans and pastas in the structure to represent organelles.
The bag was filled with water, which served as the cytoplasm and the ingredients were held together inside the bag by a special gelatin.
