We started off June with our Monthly Meetup at CGI Baseball June 1, 2016 at 6:30pm! Everyone sat on benches and chairs inside one of the batting cages, which made for a very interesting meeting. We started off the night with some catching up and dinner from Roast Sandwich House and then got ready to start the Meetup. We had some exciting updates from Renaissance Downtowns: ZBA approval has IMG_0169officially been granted for both Gateway and Northridge. The Northridge site plans have already been submitted and the Gateway plans will be submitted in the next few weeks. Thank you again to everyone that came out to support us at the ZBA meetings in March and April! There was also an update about the DOT land transfer- after conversations with Town of Huntington Lawyers and DOT Lawyers a process for the transfer has been determined and they’re hoping to get it started in the upcoming months!

After the updates from Renaissance Downtowns we heard some updates about stationsix grant winners from April and May- you can take a look at more details about them here. June had two stationsix grant winners: Elissa Kyle will be using a grant to make cinderblock benches to put at bus stops  and Con Artist will be using biodegradable paint that only appears in the rain to paint the sidewalks with Walt Whitman quotes and tango steps that lead to points of interest on New York Ave! Make sure to get these projects up to 15 likes once they’re posted.

The last day of the Huntington Station Business Favorites was May 31, 2016 so we were able to announce the winners of the Huntington Station Business Favorites Contest. The businessIMG_0164 favorites that will be featured on a poster at the train station are: 1) Chalk Paint at Suite
Pieces
 2) Kerber’s Farm Breakfast Sandwiches 3)Sonia’s Waxing Plus 4) Landscaping by Quality Island Landscaping 5) La Hacienda Roasted Chicken and Chicken Tacos 6) Guiseppe’s Sweet Sauce and Unsweet Sauce Pizza 7) Flower Arrangements from Flowerdale by Patty 8) Produce at Huntington Station Food Plaza 9) Mini Golf at Station Sports. Thanks to everyone who voted and keep supporting your favorite local businesses all year round at sourcethestation.com/favorites!

Next, we got to hear a little bit about Andrea’s recent trip to Doha Qatar, Johannesburg South
Africa, Barcelona Spain, and Paris France! During her travels she made some very interesting placemaking observations. In Qatar, there were bins for food, bottles, paper, and cans so that everything discarded could be repurposed. Johannesburg had a shopping area for local artisans made entirely of old shipping containers and in Barcelona and Paris the design of their streets and plazas make pedestrians and bikers the priority with calmer traffic patterns and public spaces for outdoor eating and even dancing! IMG_0171

Our last portion of the night was spent brainstorming stationsix grant ideas. Everyone came up with some great ideas including: a Scotch Doubles pool tournament at Instant Replay, birdhouse painting at the library, the creation and distribution of information pamphlets on pool safety, and coupon printing so that local businesses can help advertise each other. Don’t forget to take a look at all of the grant ideas we have on our website and apply by June 30th for a July stationsix grant!
