EXHIBITIONS AT THE HECKSCHER MUSEUM OF ART 

 

Master of Illusion:  The Magical Art of Gary Erbe

Through – August 28

Master of Illusion: The Magical Art of Gary Erbe traces the artist’s career from his early trompe l’oeil works to his more recent paintings that combine trompe l’oeil realism with modernist tendencies.   Inspired by popular culture, Erbe’s subjects range from nostalgic images of childhood pursuits and national pastimes, to American jazz and the golden age of 1950s radio, television, and film, to American history, nationalism, and contemporary social issues.  Painted from carefully crafted constructions of objects belonging to our shared American experience, Erbe’s work is at once aesthetically complex and profoundly engaging.

Cornucopia: Still Lifes from the Collection

Through – August 21

Still life painting celebrates the abundance, beauty, and diversity of the natural world.  Often intimate and engaging, depictions of flowers, fruit, and tabletop objects reveal an artist’s skill in rendering varying textures, in capturing the brilliance of nature’s colors, and in developing harmonious, yet complex, compositions.  This exhibition, featuring works from the Museum’s Permanent Collection, traces the development of still life painting from late 19th-century naturalism through the formalist concerns of early 20th-century modernism to the verisimilitude of photorealism in the 1970s.  Works by Carducius Plantagenet Ream, William Merritt Chase, Ilya Bolotowsky, Jan Matulka, Helen Torr, Joseph Stella, David Burliuk, Nicolai Cikovsky, Milton Avery, and Robert Kipniss are included.

 

Synapses: Threads for Thought

Synapses: Threads for Thought presents works from the Museum’s collection as a meandering thread of diverse connections.  Paintings, prints, and photographs executed in a range of styles and with varying subjects are arranged so that each work uniquely links to that which precedes and follows it.  The revealed formal and conceptual associations enlarge the viewer’s interpretation and highlight the interconnectedness of visual experience.   With works ranging from a late 16th-century painting of the Annunciation and George Grosz’s Eclipse of the Sun to abstractions by Arthur Dove and photographs by Larry Fink, this exhibition embraces the breadth of the Museum’s collection.

 

Long Island Biennial

Opens September 3

Established in 2010, the Long Island Biennial is a juried exhibition featuring artists of Nassau and Suffolk Counties.  Selected by jurors Lori Bookstein, Lori Bookstein Fine Art, New York; Seung Lee, Professor of Art, Director of Fine Arts and Graduate Studies, LIU Post; and Christina Mossaides Strassfield, Museum Director/Chief Curator, Guild Hall, East Hampton, the Biennial exhibition presents an overview of current artistic practice on the Island, providing Long Island’s artists an opportunity to share their work with a diverse public.

Long Island Biennial is sponsored in part by The Shoreland Foundation, with public funding provided by Suffolk County.

 

Looking Out, Looking In: Windows in Art

Opens September 3

Windows depicted in art serve various practical and metaphorical functions.  Whether casting light that illuminates a scene or providing formal structure to a composition, windows signify a boundary between private and public spaces. Allowing or preventing the viewer visual access, windows mediate between interior and exterior, providing connections or maintaining separation.  Drawn from the Museum’s Permanent Collection, Looking Out, Looking In explores the use of windows in paintings and photographs of the 19th and 20th centuries by artists such as Berenice Abbott, Don Eddy, Fairfield Porter, Emilio Sanchez, John Sloan, and Helen Miranda Wilson.

Hiroya Tsukamoto, Jazz World Guitar

Friday, August 5

Join us on an impressionistic journey with internationally acclaimed guitarist and composer Hiroya Tsukamoto.  Hailing from Kyoto, Japan, Hiroya blends diverse genres of music from jazz, folk, and world. His earthy soundscapes impart an atmosphere of peace and tranquility, described by many as pure cinematic guitar poetry.

 

First Friday is not scheduled for July 1.

 

Exploring Art…Making Memories

With the understanding that artistic experiences stimulate new pathways of learning, expression, and memories, the Museum offers a unique program for individuals living with dementia and their care partners. Specially trained professionals lead an interactive tour of select works and encourage group discussion. Light refreshments will be served. Registration is required. Space is limited.

Plein Air Painting Workshop at Dove/Torr Cottage

12:00 noon – 3:00 pm: Painting Workshop at Dove/Torr Cottage

Museum and ALLI Members $75, Non-Members $85 

Be inspired by the same light, wind, water, and sand that inspired modernist artists Arthur Dove and Helen Torr. Join landscape painter and instructor Doug Reina for this special one-day plein air workshop at their cottage home situated on the picturesque banks of the Titus Mill Pond, 30 Centershore Road, Centerport.  Begin with a tour of the Museum’s exhibition then picnic on the Dove/Torr cottage grounds and experience the lure of plein air painting.   Bring your own art (drawing and painting) supplies and a brown bag lunch. Registration required.

 

Poetry for Thought Workshops

The Museum’s Cultivating Creativity exhibition on view at the Huntington Public Library, 338 Main Street, Huntington, features a selection of artwork created by Museum visitors.
