The Alfred Van Loen Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of recent paintings by Edward Evans.

Evans spent his early years in Minnesota and now lives and works in Stroudsburg, PA.  He is the curator at the Southwest Minnesota State University Art Museum as well as other venues.  Evans also is the owner and curator of Gallery 705 in Stroudsburg, PA. His works have been exhibited widely in museums and galleries nationally and internationally, including Italy and Switzerland. Evans work is included in many private and corporate collections.

Intuitive and visceral, the artist’s abstractions are bold in composition, reflecting his feelings and memories of his travels and experiences.  For Evans, he has always been attracted to a certain amount of illusion in painting, and admired the old masters, “Da Vinci’s chiaroscuro, Caravaggio’s dramatically staged lighting, Rembrandt’s elusive shadows, and the romantic light of the American luminist painters.”  For Evans beauty is important, and he achieves such beauty using air brush and glazing techniques that he has mastered.  These acrylics on linen paintings give the impression of photo realism at first glance, and but then you notice how he’s creating his own language, interplaying with image and abstraction.  Many artists struggle to have their materials, tools, content and impulse evolve as harmonious, Edward Evans seems to succeed demonstrating fluid poetry.
