The family of a beloved Huntington Station nurse killed in a car crash with an alleged drunken driver wants to help stop people who have been drinking alcohol from getting behind the wheel and push for tougher penalties for those who do, family members said Wednesday.

“Keys for Karen,” in honor of Karen Holden, 56, a longtime nurse at St. Francis Hospital in Flower Hill who was killed Sunday night, June 25, 2016 , is a campaign started on social media by Holden’s sister to get bar and restaurant owners to designate a box at their establishment where those who have been drinking can leave their keys.

It was a summer evening when loving mother, sister, wife, and friend, Karen Holden, was taken from us in a fatal car crash caused by a second offender drunk driver. Her husband, William Holden, and her son, Robert Holden, were also in the car and suffered severe injuries. They are currently out of the hospital in stable condition but are struggling to recover with the news of their loss. Karen Holden is also survived by her son Kenneth Holden who was in the process of starting a new home in Virginia with his wife Cynthia and a new life as a police officer. Karen, William, and Robert were on their way to Virginia to help Kenneth and his wife decorate their first home together when the accident occurred. Maverick, their dog, who was also in the car escaped the accident and ran away only to be found with cuts on her front paws. She was covered in the paint that was to be used in Kenneth’s new home.

Karen was an extremely giving woman who dedicated her life to helping others by working as a nurse at St. Francis Hospital. She also was a caring family member who never failed to rush to those in need. She will be missed by her family and friends and this loss is indescribable.

We are respectfully asking that you donate what you can to help pay for Karen’s funeral, William and Robert’s medical expenses, as well as legal fees associated with the crash. Even small donations will help. We appreciate so much any love and support you can send us.karenholden
